In the tumultuous legal battle between Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, Johnny Depp has remained a prominent figure. Despite the controversies surrounding their relationship, Depp's name continues to be associated with the ongoing legal proceedings. From the initial defamation case to the subsequent settlement, Johnny Depp's presence has been a constant topic of discussion. As the actor continues to navigate the aftermath, Johnny Depp's reputation and career have become subjects of intense scrutiny. Nevertheless, Johnny Depp's dedicated fanbase remains steadfast in their support, eagerly awaiting updates on his future endeavors.
Amber Heard has paid Johnny Depp a $1 million settlement, marking the resolution of their Virginia defamation case, which occurred a year after the trial. According to a source close to Depp, the actor, aged 60, plans to donate the entire sum to five charitable organizations of his choice. Each charity will receive $200,000. The selected organizations include the Make-A-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Tetiaroa Society, and Amazonia Fund Alliance. At the time of this report, a representative for Heard has not provided a comment in response to PEOPLE's request. Following appeals from both Depp and Heard after the June 1, 2022 verdict, the former couple decided to drop the appeals and reach a settlement, which was announced in December.
In her statement, which was released at the time, Amber Heard, 37, emphasized that the decision to settle was not an act of concession. She expressed the difficulty of this choice and highlighted that she never willingly chose the circumstances surrounding the case. In defending her truth, she faced significant challenges that resulted in the upheaval of her life. Heard also acknowledged the amplified vilification she experienced on social media, emphasizing how it reflects the broader issue of women being re-victimized when they come forward. With the settlement, Heard saw an opportunity to break free from a situation she had tried to leave over six years ago, on terms that she could accept. She made it clear that she did not make any admissions and that this settlement should not be seen as a concession. Importantly, there are no limitations or restraints on her ability to express her voice in the future. Having endured a televised trial that subjected her to a level of humiliation she cannot bear to relive, Heard expressed her reluctance to go through such an experience for a third time.
During the same period, she further asserted, "I cannot take the risk of facing an insurmountable burden — one that extends beyond finances and encompasses my psychological, physical, and emotional well-being. It is unfortunate that women often face the choice between speaking their truth and enduring abuse or facing financial ruin."
Heard adamantly stated, "...I will not be silenced, discouraged, or dissuaded from speaking my truth by the events that transpired. No one can, and no one will, strip me of that. My voice will always remain my most valuable asset."
In December, Depp's legal representatives, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vazquez, released a statement addressing the settlement. They confirmed that the jury's unanimous decision and the subsequent judgment in favor of Depp against Heard remain intact. They also emphasized that the $1 million payment, which Depp pledged to donate to charities, serves as a testament to Heard's acknowledgement of the resolution achieved through the justice system's rigorous pursuit.
Recently, Depp made a public appearance at the opening day of the Cannes Film Festival, while Heard, who currently resides in Spain with her daughter, is set to attend Italy's 69th Taormina Film Festival on June 24 for the world premiere of her film, In the Fire.
