Arsenal identify Emiliano Martinez replacement+detail Arsenal are in the transfer market for a new back-up goalkeeper with Emiliano Martinez set to join Aston Villa. Arsenal are closing in on Icelandic goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson as a replacement for the recently-departed Emiliano Martinez. Martinez has joined Aston Villa in a deal worth around €20m after excelling for the Gunners since the lockdown. A long-term injury to Bernd Leno in June provided the Argentine with a chance to step into the first-team, and he quickly impressed fans with his form. With Leno still remaining as Arsenal’s number one now that he’s fit once again, Martinez decided to leave a club that he first joined as a 16-year-old. According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are ‘close’ to a deal to sign Runarsson from Ligue 1 side Dijon as Martinez’s replacement. Brentford’s David Raya was the London outfit’s original target, but the Bees are not looking to sell any more players after shifting on Ollie Watkins to Villa for nearly €30m. The five-cap Iceland international will be coming to the Emirates instead after two years with the French side. After leaving his homeland as a teenager, Runarsson made his name with FC Nordsjælland in Denmark before joining Dijon in 2018. The stopper made headlines earlier this month after deleting a tweet which called legendary Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger a ‘French f*ck’. The 25-year-old has been on the bench for Dijon in their first three league matches of the new season. He could potentially be signed and registered in time to make the squad for Arsenal’s Saturday night clash with West Ham at the Emirates sources: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/ https://extra.ie/
