New Netflix releases you can’t miss next week

The sheer volume of new releases that Netflix has in store for us next week is overwhelming. From a fresh crime series produced by Jason Bateman's company, with a title that humorously references the "Florida Man" meme, to a standalone movie that extends the story of The Last Kingdom franchise, as well as new Korean and documentary series, and much more.

In this weekend's preview, we have a lot to cover, so let's dive right in.

What are others reading:

In the previously mentioned show, Florida Man, Edgar Ramirez portrays Mike Valentine, a former police officer who is struggling to make ends meet. He returns to his home state of Florida with a seemingly straightforward task at hand: to locate the missing girlfriend of a Philadelphia mobster.

As expected, things quickly spiral out of control, which is not surprising given the show's namesake that refers to the bizarre and creative ways in which "Florida Man" has been caught breaking the law.

According to Netflix, the plot revolves around Valentine's futile efforts to do the right thing in a place where everything seems to be going wrong. Furthermore, he must navigate complex relationships with his father and ex-wife, who only serve to pull him back into the hometown he had attempted to escape from.

The show's creator, Donald Todd, has assembled a talented cast, including Abbey Lee, Anthony LaPaglia, Clark Gregg, and Paul Schneider. The series is described as "a wild odyssey into a sunny place for shady people," and all eight episodes will premiere on April 13th.

Todd is well aware of the notorious "Florida Man" headlines and mugshots that often make the news, but he wants to delve deeper with this Netflix release and uncover what lies beneath the surface of this popular vacation destination.

"In my youth," he stated in a Netflix interview, "I never stopped wondering why Florida is the way it is. Florida is like a thin, porous crust atop a hundred feet of water, and it's only a few feet above sea level... it could all sink. When you understand that everything is temporary, you take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way."

"'Florida man' is a term used to describe an individual who is fiercely independent and does not conform to societal norms or rules," explains Todd.

In addition to Florida Man, there are several other exciting releases to look out for on Netflix. If you were left feeling mournful when The Last Kingdom came to a close in 2022, you'll be delighted to know that there's one more installment in the form of a standalone movie called Seven Kings Must Die. It's set to debut on Netflix on April 14th.

I've mentioned it previously, and I'll reiterate it now: The Last Kingdom is perhaps one of the greatest franchises on Netflix, based on the historical novel series Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. The debut of Seven Kings Must Die, a final gift for fans, will undoubtedly be met with the same level of adoration as the show's five seasons, as indicated by the Rotten Tomatoes ratings, which never appeared to decrease.

The plot for Seven Kings Must Die is as follows: "For a hundred years, conflict has plagued the land between its inhabitants and the Danish invaders. However, a truce has been established, and the country is nearly united, with the exception of Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who rules over Northumbria and has yet to pledge his loyalty to the throne. But when King Edward passes away, the peace is jeopardized as his two potential heirs, Aethelstan and Aelfweard, engage in a power struggle to claim the throne."

In the meantime, a new danger emerges in the shape of the Danish Warrior-King. Additionally, Aethelstan's actions are generating adversaries throughout the British Isles, putting Uhtred's ambition of a united kingdom in jeopardy.

Here are some other releases that will be available on Netflix in the upcoming days:

Queenmaker: This K-drama, according to Netflix's summary, follows the story of "a prominent fixer who uses her expertise to turn a civil rights lawyer into the next mayor, and seeks to take down her previous employer after a tragic accident."

Netflix's Korean productions are usually known for their excellent quality and large budgets, making them a must-see for many viewers. With its release date set for April 14, Queenmaker is the latest addition to the list of highly anticipated Korean titles on the platform. The popularity of these productions was recently demonstrated by The Glory, another Korean series that briefly became the most-watched show on Netflix worldwide.

I see what you mean. Damage is a steamy thriller about a British politician named Stephen (played by Mark Stanley) who embarks on a passionate affair with his son's fiancée, Anna (played by Lydia Wilson). As their illicit relationship progresses, they must navigate the consequences of their actions and the impact it has on their families and careers. The film also stars Irish actress Conleth Hill, best known for his role as Varys in Game of Thrones. Damage arrives on Netflix on April 15.

The docuseries, titled "This Is a Robbery: The World's Biggest Art Heist," is actually a true crime series exploring the unsolved theft of $500 million worth of art from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The series features interviews with key players in the investigation, as well as archival footage and reenactments. It premiered on April 7, 2021, and has received positive reviews from critics and viewers alike.

American Manhunt sounds like a powerful and emotional documentary that will take viewers on a journey back to one of the darkest moments in Boston's history. The use of multiple sources, including video footage and personal testimonies, will likely provide a thorough and engaging retelling of the events. It will be interesting to see how the documentary examines the themes of resilience and community in the face of tragedy.

Hunger seems like a tense and thrilling drama that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. It explores the dark side of ambition and the price one must pay to achieve success in a cutthroat industry. The culinary world is a fascinating backdrop for a story of power dynamics and betrayal, and Hunger looks like it will deliver on that front. It will be interesting to see how the characters and their relationships evolve over the course of the series. Hunger is set to debut on Netflix on April 14.

Starring Jaime Winstone and Jodie Comer, this British psychological drama promises to be a tense and steamy exploration of love, lust, and betrayal. The series has already aired in the UK to critical acclaim, and is now available for streaming on Netflix.
