Lionel Messi Opens Up About Challenging Transition at Paris Saint-Germain: "It Was Tougher Than I Expected"
Lionel Messi has candidly admitted to facing difficulties in adapting to his new surroundings at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after joining the French club in 2021. In an interview with beIN Sports, the Argentine forward revealed the challenges he encountered during his time at PSG.
Despite achieving two league titles and delivering impressive performances with 21 goals and 20 assists across all competitions in the past season, Messi fell short of securing Champions League glory for the club. His tenure in the French capital took a bitter turn when he faced suspension for an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia, for which he later expressed remorse.
Reflecting on his move to PSG two years ago, Messi shared, "The truth is, it was a very difficult adaptation, much more than I expected. Despite having people I knew in the locker room and having a relationship with them, it was difficult to adapt to the new change, arriving late and not having a pre-season. Adapting to the new club, a new style of play, my new teammates, and the city was initially challenging for me and my entire family."
Recently, Messi made headlines by announcing his move to Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami, with his debut expected to take place in the United States in July. The 36-year-old, who spent 17 remarkable seasons at Barcelona prior to joining PSG, faced mixed reception from fans in France, even experiencing boos during some of his final matches.
Regarding his relationship with the Parisian public, Messi commented, "From the beginning, it was something very nice, as I mentioned many times. However, over time, a portion of the Paris fans started treating me differently. While the majority continued to see and treat me the same way, there was a disconnect with a significant portion of the fans, which was never my intention. It happened before with [teammates Kylian] Mbappé and Neymar as well. I understand it's their way of reacting, but it remains an anecdote for me, as I value and appreciate those who have shown respect, just as I have respected everyone since my arrival."
