Kylian Mbappe, the Paris Saint-Germain superstar, has voiced his criticism towards France for the way Lionel Messi was treated during his two seasons in Ligue 1.
After leaving Barcelona in 2021 and joining PSG on a free transfer, Messi faced challenges adapting to his new team despite winning the league twice. PSG fans even booed and jeered the 35-year-old forward following the team's Champions League exits in recent seasons.
Choosing not to extend his PSG contract, Messi is now set to join Major League Soccer's Inter Miami. Mbappe, a former teammate of Messi's at PSG, defended the Argentine maestro and expressed that he deserved more respect in France.
"We're discussing the potential departure of the greatest player in football history," Mbappe stated in an interview with Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport. "It's never a positive development when someone like Messi leaves."
Mbappe further expressed his confusion regarding the relief felt by many people upon Messi's departure, stating, "Personally, I haven't really understood why so many people were relieved that he was leaving. We're talking about Messi, he should be respected -- but instead, he didn't get the respect he deserved in France. It's a shame, but that's how it went. He'll have to be replaced as best as possible."
Regarding his own future, Mbappe clarified that he did not request a move to Real Madrid this summer. He confirmed his happiness to continue playing for PSG next season but stated that he will not extend his contract with the club.
Mbappe's recent letter to the club, in which he expressed no intention to extend his PSG contract set to expire in 2024, caused a stir. If he doesn't activate the extension clause, PSG risks losing him for free in June 2024. Starting from January, he will also have the freedom to sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club if he decides to see out the remaining year of his deal at PSG.

Mbappe clarified that he did not request a transfer to Real Madrid or any other club. He stated, "I didn't ask either to be sold or to go to Real Madrid. I just confirmed that I don't want to activate the extra year foreseen in the contract. We have never talked about a renewal with PSG, but I'm happy to stay here next season."
Recent reports from ESPN suggest that Real Madrid is prepared to make a bid for Mbappe this summer, and the player is eager to join the LaLiga giants. Sources indicate that PSG would consider offers in the region of €150 million ($161.5m) for the French captain.
While Madrid previously pursued Mbappe but failed to secure his signature, the club is currently undergoing a rebuild after the departure of Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema. As a result, their focus may shift towards Mbappe, who has been the top scorer in Ligue 1 for the past five seasons.
