Netflix's hit film "The Mother" continues to dominate, achieving a record-breaking 83.71 million hours viewed since its premiere. One standout moment in the thrilling action flick is the intense hallway fight scene, where protagonist The Mother (played by Jennifer Lopez) battles her way through the Mexican compound of the villain Hector (portrayed by Gael Garcia Bernal). Accompanied by the iconic track "Angel" by Massive Attack, Lopez delivers a captivating performance as she eliminates adversaries and fights to rescue her daughter.
According to director Niki Caro, the inclusion of the song was always part of her vision for the film. She shared, "I designed that sequence specifically for that song. It was always playing in my head. I sent the song to the second unit director and stunt coordinator along with the storyboards, emphasizing that 'This is the song.'" Caro expressed her immense relief when Massive Attack granted permission to use the song, stating, "It would have devastated me if they hadn't approved. I was extremely nervous throughout the process."
Director Niki Caro's meticulous planning was essential for shooting the intricate sequence, involving two separate units, on-location. Jennifer Lopez praised Caro's precision, stating that everything was carefully scripted and choreographed, leading up to the intense climax between The Mother and Hector. The scene was filmed at around four in the morning, adding to the intensity.
However, the real test came during the editing process, ensuring that the individual scenes aligned perfectly with the beats of the song. Caro recalled anxiously working on the editing, with the song playing on her phone while viewing the cutscene on her computer, hoping for a seamless synchronization.
The final result left Caro, Lopez, and producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas in awe. Goldsmith-Thomas marveled at Caro's pre-planned beauty and choreography, perfectly synchronized with the beats of the song, surpassing her expectations.
