"Is Protein Lemonade Healthy? The Latest TikTok Trend Explored As summer arrives, a new TikTok trend has emerged - frosted protein lemonade. Online creators are giving a new twist to their protein shakes by substituting lemonade and ice for fresh fruit and yogurt. This results in a sweet and frosty smoothie that many claim to be a healthier alternative to traditional frozen summer treats.

The popularity of protein lemonade surged as TikTokers began making their own versions of Chick-fil-A's Frosted Lemonade. The aim was to create a lower calorie and sugar, high protein version of this refreshing summertime beverage.

What are others reading:

The original Chick-fil-A frosted lemonade contains a combination of whole milkfat and nonfat dry milk, sugar, water, lemon juice, and various preservatives and stabilizers. Nutritionally, it contains 65 grams of carbohydrates, 6 grams of protein, and 6 grams of fat.

The copycat recipes on TikTok typically blend together lemonade, ice, and vanilla-flavored protein powder. Some even add vanilla extract for more flavor.

While some are skeptical of the protein lemonade trend, dietitians agree that it could be a healthy way to enjoy a protein shake, as long as it's consumed in moderation."

According to Jamie Nadeau, RD and founder of The Balanced Nutritionist, the protein lemonade is not much different from a standard protein shake that people typically mix up. She added that if someone is not fond of protein powder, the protein lemonade could serve as an alternative protein shake.

As protein lemonade gains popularity, many people wonder about its health benefits. Bloggers and TikTok users have posted a variety of protein lemonade recipes, with surprising ingredient combinations ranging from sugar-free lemonade to almond milk, and even powdered vanilla pudding mix.

While homemade protein lemonade recipes are highly customizable, many opt for a healthier version of lemonade to make the beverage as nutritious as possible. Blair Persyn, RD, LDN, CNSC and founder of Bites With Blair, notes that Light or Zero Sugar lemonade is often the lemonade of choice, as it contains no added sugar and is instead sweetened with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

When it comes to purchasing lemonade at the grocery store, choosing a brand labeled "freshly squeezed" usually indicates a high-quality product. However, if someone prefers lemonade with traditional sugars like cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup, it's important to monitor their sugar intake. A 12-ounce serving of lemonade contains about six teaspoons of sugar, and adults should not exceed 12 teaspoons of added sugar daily.

For those who prefer a low or no-sugar option, they should be aware that artificial sweeteners can cause stomach discomfort. Some protein lemonade recipes call for fresh squeezed lemon juice with natural sweeteners like honey, agave, or maple syrup to add sweetness.

According to Blair Persyn, "Both sugar and artificial sugar have their drawbacks, but I believe most things are fine in moderation."

In terms of protein, the TikTok version of Frosted Lemonade contains 15 to 30 grams of protein per serving, which is significantly higher than the original Chick-fil-A version.

According to current research, the body can absorb around 20 to 25 grams of protein per meal, and protein intake should be spread out throughout the day, including snacks. When using protein powder, it is recommended to consume no more than 20 to 40 grams per day.

"Protein powders can help people meet their protein needs," Persyn said. "Older adults, vegans, and athletes all require more protein, so this frozen protein lemonade can be a fun way to get extra protein."

There are many protein powders available on the market, and the choice of protein powder comes down to personal preference. Some protein powders are made from whey protein, while others are made from vegan sources such as soy or pea.

Most recipes call for vanilla protein powder to give the frosted drink a creamy flavor that complements the tanginess of the lemonade.
