FilmNation is set to bring a biopic about the iconic Greek-American soprano Maria Callas to the Cannes market, with Angelina Jolie attached to star. The biopic, titled "Maria," will be directed by Oscar nominee Pablo Larraín and will tell the tumultuous story of Callas' life during her final days in 1970s Paris. The film is based on true accounts and is expected to offer a reimagining of the renowned opera singer's career and personal life. FilmNation has recently signed on to handle worldwide sales and will be launching the project ahead of the Cannes market, which is set to begin next week. Further casting for the film is currently underway.
The upcoming film, which will be produced by Fabula Pictures, The Apartment Pictures, and Komlizen Film, was penned by fellow Oscar nominee Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders. Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín's brother and creative partner Juan de Dios Larraín will produce the project.
Angelina Jolie, who recently starred in Marvel's Eternals and Warner Bros' Those Who Wish Me Dead, will take on the lead role in the biopic. The film will be directed by Pablo Larraín, known for his work on Spencer and Jackie, which starred Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy.
In addition to Maria, FilmNation has a robust lineup for the Cannes market, including The Invite, a comedy featuring Amy Adams and Paul Rudd, The Cooler, an action-thriller with Dave Bautista, Voyagers starring Andrew Garfield, and The Life Of Chuck, a Stephen King adaptation featuring Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill. Jolie is also currently in post-production for Without Blood, her fifth directorial feature and the first project under her three-year deal with Fremantle, announced earlier this year.
