An attorney for former President Donald Trump, Evan Corcoran, has stepped down from representing him in the special counsel investigation regarding Mar-a-Lago documents. This decision comes after Corcoran testified for investigators without the protection of attorney-client privilege, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke with CNN. The special counsel's office had compelled Corcoran to testify, and prosecutors had accused Trump of utilizing his attorney to further a crime.

Although Corcoran withdrew from the Mar-a-Lago probe several weeks ago, he continues to represent Trump on other matters, such as the investigation into the events of January 6, 2021. He appeared in court on behalf of the former president for confidential proceedings related to this part of the probe shortly after his testimony in the Mar-a-Lago case. The Washington Post initially reported Corcoran's withdrawal from the Mar-a-Lago case.

It is possible for Corcoran to resume his representation of Trump in the documents case now that he has given testimony. However, it is uncertain how valuable his evidence and statements will be for the prosecutors, given that he provided testimony twice to the grand jury and handed over documents.

Corcoran's defense attorney declined to comment, and Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, criticized the sources quoted in the report and called their information "disinformation."

Corcoran had a unique perspective on the events in which Trump and his team were responding to the government's request for classified documents.

In January, Corcoran appeared before the grand jury but invoked attorney-client privilege, refusing to answer certain questions about his conversations with Trump and the advice he had given him, according to a source who spoke with CNN. Prosecutors then took the unusual step of seeking a court order to compel him to provide information, which a federal court granted in March, just prior to his subsequent appearance before the grand jury.

During his testimony, prosecutors questioned Corcoran about his direct interactions with Trump regarding a subpoena for all classified records in the former president's possession in May 2022, as well as the search for those records. They also asked about conversations between Corcoran and Trump when the Trump Organization received a separate subpoena for surveillance video of the club.

In June, Corcoran composed a statement that declared Trump's team had conducted a thorough search for boxes and had provided all relevant classified records in response to the May subpoena. However, months later, the FBI discovered hundreds of additional pages marked as classified during their search of Mar-a-Lago, a crucial development in the probe into records mishandling and obstruction of justice.

In recent weeks, the grand jury proceedings, including Corcoran's compelled testimony, have indicated that prosecutors are gathering evidence from many sources that could be used in a potential case against Trump.

To date, the former president has not been charged with any federal offenses.
