United picked up their first victory in three matches on Wednesday night, running out 3-1 winners against Brentford thanks to goals from Elanga, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford. Yet their triumph did not go without drama, as in the 71st minute Ronaldo reacted negatively to being replaced by Ralf Rangnick. When he was substituted in west London, the 36-year-old gestured furiously and threw his jacket to the ground before holding his arms out in frustration. Ronaldo's reaction dominated the headlines despite United's win, and Merson believes he owes academy graduate Elanga, their star performer on the night, an apology for his antics. The Portuguese star was less than impressed and made his feelings clear before questioning the decision whilst sat on the bench. His antics deflected away from United's performance and the display of their young winger, who excellently found the back of the net. Merson believes the No 7, who he claimed was now a "shadow" of his former self, should make amends for his actions. "Cristiano owes Anthony Elanga a big apology," Merson wrote in the Daily Star. "What he did against Brentford spoiled the youngster’s big day – and it was so childish. "The poor kid. He starts his first Premier League game of the season, scores for Manchester United. "And then Ronaldo gets substituted, strops off and has a hissy fit. As soon as it happened as I said to my mate: ‘You watch, you won’t even know the kid has scored now.’ "It was unbelievable for someone who’s been around the game that long to do that and take the headlines away from Elanga. "It’s not happening for him. I went to the game with my boy, to show him Ronaldo. One of the greatest players of all time. "He’s a shadow of that player. An absolute shadow." Rangnick took time to explain his decision to the 36-year-old forward. The German stopped short of blaming his player for his the reaction, understanding his desire to score goals but felt his antics were not in the best interest of the team. “I don’t blame him for that but obviously any manager would wish it shouldn’t be too emotional and also in front of the TV cameras I don’t think this will be for the benefit of anyone: not to his benefit or teammates,” he said. ‘And then Ronaldo gets substituted, strops off and has a hissy fit. As soon as it happened as I said to my mate: "You watch, you won’t even know the kid has scored now." ‘It was unbelievable for someone who’s been around the game that long to do that and take the headlines away from Elanga.' Rangnick said on the change after the game: ‘He was asking me, “why me, why do you take me off?” Cristiano was not happy. ‘I said, “listen, I have to take the decision in the interests of the team and the club.” ‘We had exactly the same situation five days ago at Villa Park, 2-0 up with 15 minutes to play [and drew] and we didn’t want to make the same mistake. I decided to switch to a back five, bring on Maguire and Marcus as another fast winger and I think it was the right decision. ‘I said, “I understand you’re still ambitious and you want to score yourself but maybe in a couple of years when you’re a head coach you will hopefully take the same decision and be in the same role that I was after 75 minutes.” ‘I didn’t expect him to hug me. He is a goalscorer and he would have wished to stay on and maybe score but it was more important to be compact and have enough legs and strong headers to defend their set pieces and when we scored the third goal I said exactly that to him. ‘I have no issues whatsoever with Cristiano. He came back from a little injury, didn’t train for one and half weeks and being 2-0 up with 15 minutes to play, having players like Marcus, Anthony Martial why should I not make use of that and that’s why I would always do it again in a situation like that.’ United are still struggling for form following the arrival of Rangnick at the helm and currently sit seventh in the Premier League.
