FC Barcelona Captain Busquets Denies Lionel Messi Agreement With Al-Hilal
FC Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets has dismissed rumors of an agreement between himself and former teammate Lionel Messi to join Al-Hilal in an interview with Mundo Deportivo.
Busquets is set to leave FC Barcelona when his contract expires on June 30, the same date that Messi will become a free agent at Paris Saint-Germain.
Earlier this month, there were reports from El Chiringuito claiming that Busquets, Messi, and Jordi Alba had already agreed to join Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal during the summer transfer window.
According to the Spanish football program, Messi would receive a staggering €350 million ($375 million) per year in the Middle East, a move that would instantly make him the highest-paid athlete in the world according to Forbes' list in 2024.
Jorge Messi, Lionel Messi's father, strongly denied any agreement in a statement. As Busquets prepares for his farewell ceremony on Wednesday, he echoed similar sentiments in his interview with Mundo Deportivo, stating that nothing is set in stone regarding a move to Al-Hilal.
When asked directly about the rumors of accepting offers from the Saudi club alongside Messi and Alba, Busquets responded emphatically, saying, "No, no, surely not. I give you my word."
During the interview, Busquets was also questioned about leaving Camp Nou at a time when there are speculations of Messi potentially returning to the club.
